… the alternative to Seif Lotfy

As stupid as it sounds I do get frustrated when people get my name wrong.
It is Seif Lotfy (here is a wikipedia link for the meaning and pronunciation of Seif).

I hear and read some mispronunciations and misspellings of SEIF like:

  • Sief
  • Siev
  • Safe
  • Save
  • Seiv
  • Sif

Also my last name LOTFY keeps being misread, thus resulting to:

  • Lofty
  • Lofti
  • Lotfi
  • Loufty

Now I can not  blame people for misreading and mispronouncing it. It is an Arabic name but sounds like taken from a Star Trek character. I had some funny encounters when trying to introduce myself. Here are some reactions I get:

  • Ah is this your real name?
  • OK this is your IRC name what is your real name?
  • Oh seif as in SAFE… (stupid examples varying from safebox to safe sex)
  • Bless you! (I swear that happened at UDS)
  • WTF?
  • HAHAHAHA you cant even pronounce your last name (stupid drunk barkeeper)

So to end these occurrences i decided to adopt a new alternative “hacker name”…

STEVE LOFTY

So for anyone who has issues with my name please refer to the the alternative. I will work on reacting to it. You can now even contact me under:

Thanks for your tolerance…

Steve Lofty (Seif Lotfy)

hi seif, first i have to say it’s really sad you have to adapt your hacker name, but this isn’t the reason i’m here. The reason is that i’m compiling sezen and zeitgeist from bzr, and they doesn’t get to manage the images and videos history, i don’t know what i am missing, can you help me hand?
by the way, i see you’ve improved file’s selection in sezen, good work.

You should put the pronunciation guide right after your name in your sig or in this post – like they do for words in the dictionary.

I would quite like to know how Lotfy is pronounced but I can’t immediately see a resource with this information.

Yeah, Wikipedia doesn’t seem to have the pronunciation. It looks like it should rhyme with “leaf”, but “safe” works too. Long live Steve!

I’m sorry, I love your work but changing your name is lame, your name isn’t that hard.

  21. Martin | August 31, 2010 at 1:07 pm | Permalink

So you’ve changed your name from Sword to Crown? From Arabic fighter to Greek throne warmer :-P

Don’t give in! Your name is your name and people will have to learn to pronounce it! It is not only a courtesy to you, but also a consciousness raiser, because it makes people aware that not everyone comes from an English-speaking country.

My first name is similar to a very common English word, but pronounced differently. Most kind people will at least try to get your name right if you point it out to them.

Come on man. My name is Sean Middleditch. People call me “seen” far more often than they should, and my slavic last name somehow got turned into “middle ditch” instead of the original “mid led itch” even by my own family. My mother’s maiden name is just as badly mangled by most people. English just sucks with its non-phonetic alphabet and wildly differing pronunciation rules even within its own core vocabulary. :)
