So at Elementary and Zeitgeist we have been trying to tackle the issue from my last blog post. Well to keep it short prototypes have been developed (and Sezen was ported to Vala). Here are 2 applet we intend to refine before we go into testing people.

Objective: Open Movie sezen.ogv
Standard GNOME Desktop:
1. clicked desktop button several times (???)
2. applications -> Sound Video -> Movie Player
3. Movie player -> File -> Open…
4. Browsing (1 minute)
Sezen Applet with categories:
1. Click on Video on the top panel -> found it in the list
2. Out of curiosity clicked on “More…”

I think the “Find” menu is more… elegant than the multi-category menubar applet.
+ 1 for the the “find” menu applet iteration, too. It look cleaner and, under the guise of ‘find’, is much more logical in terms of actioning.

1. Open Nautilus –> Movie folder (or just search on tool bar)
2. find out the movie, double click it
3. that’s all
Your demonstration is interesting but… it means that you remember the name of the file you are looking for ! Just use your computer a day or two, and check if you know its name every time you look for a file. No way it can be 100%. The “browsing” solution cannot be totally replaced unfortunately. It will take time before we all put tags on all our files to find them easily with keywords.
‘Find’ is better than having the categories on display. The categories just take up to much space for something I might only want to get access to once a day. Unless of course… you use Zeitgeist so it only ever shows the individual categories I might want during any given task
Even then though… Find is better. Though the final design would need to make the ‘Find’ pop more, ie. stand out. It needs to be an icon perhaps. Just having a word doesn’t really draw attention to it as much as it needs.
