Naming my Gadgets and Electronic Devices

I have been reading a lot of blog entries about how people call their computer etc….
I tend to use names from the peanuts….

Desktop: Snoopy
Virtual Machine on Desktop: Virtual Snoopy
Laptop: Schroeder
Virtual Machine on Laptop: Virtual Schroeder
iPod: Charlie
Home Netwrok: Snoopyland
Cellphone: Linus
Girlfriend/Fiance’s Laptop: Lucy

Since I am changing my life I thought I should change all that. So here are other themes i would love to name after:

1.Star Wars
2.Southpark
3.Spongebob
4.Simpsons
5.He-Man
6.Nintendo Characters

Any suggestions or preferences?

I use muppets characters. Network is called muppets. Kermit is primary desktop, I use oscar for backup/other server, firewall is gonzo. But I liked the muppets when I was growing up.

I’ve gone He-Man with most of mine.

Zodac for Laptop, Orko for Desktop, Battle Cat for Mobile Phone and Cringer for the memory card inside the phone.

I use Tolkien references myself, though I avoid the more obvious things like LotR character names – there are already too many frodo’s and bilbo’s on the net already. I tend to use more obscure ones, e.g my desktop is Aeglos, spear of Gil-Galad.

Yeah, it’s geeky – but why pretend otherwise?

I think He-Man would be *seriously* cool. It’s trashy and now obscure enough to be old-school cool. And Skeletor is simply an awesome name :)

Transformers would be cool too! But I agree with Andreas, He-Man rocks!

I’ve used sith lords in one environment. I’ve also used peanuts characters for naming.

A friend’s workplace uses south park characters for their Linux desktop machines. The lone Windows machine (used for testing) is aptly named “Token”.

I figured naming the machines after “The Big Bang Theory” TV series characters would eb a nice option.

    Sheldon lol

Big Buck Bunny and Elephant’s Dream characters!

    I use Simpsons Characters.
My Desktop is always ‘homer’, my laptop is always ‘bart’. I had a server named ‘mrburns’ once…you get the idea…

    I’m impartial to pronouns myself.

We named our work network Springfield. The samba file server is frink, the internal testing web server was mcbain – those two machines are now the same, so the windows desktops still see frink, but ssh logins see mcbain as the host name. Our hosted webserver is shelbyville.
My laptop is pelerin, and my home network is beleriand, with the main desktop being doriath.

I named all my gadget after characters in x-men.
I have mystique for laptop, storm for desktop, and rogue for the cellphone.

obscure Czech (not only) reformers from XVI. (not only) century and I don’t recycle them. So after going through rehor, lukas, hus, and mitmanek, and I am now in more understandable waters of luther, viklef, hubmaier. :)

I like the theme “aikido throws”. My workstation where I sit right now is called shihonage, which is my favourite technique. I suggest you use the same theme, as it is obviously superior to all the other themes mentioned above. :-)

What about characters from »Lord of the ring« (maybe not as nerdy as before the films came up).

Or think about some characters/robots from »Hitchhiker’s Guide Through the Galaxy«.

Support Henning’s idea. I had a “Marvin the Fossil” for a while… (It was old, and it was cranky). I think Hitchhiker’s and Star Trek could be pretty cool.

…Spock? Deep Thought? Great Green Arkleseizure?

I generally go with names I like: phone — Ernesto (it’s SD card is called Ernestina), laptop under Linux — Evgenij, laptop under Windows — Isaiah, external hdd — Herbert, Ipod — Rahel, virtual machines, always — Frankenstein. It’s all not quite consistent.

Well, I use ship names from the Alien quadrilogy, so I have Betty, Nostromo, Auriga and Sulaco lying around ;)

I use names from famous books:
“Messiah” (messiah is currently dead…?) and “Seraphim” – seraphim is a super silent powerful desktop.
My white macbook is called “Morlock” because the colour reminds me a lot of pale skin.
I also had a “Leviathan” a while back at my previous job. “Bahamut” is a possible candidate for a new computer. Usually I think about what the computer will be doing and then a name sort of pops into my head.

There’s sort of a pattern – all very pretentious of course ;)
